The day began with off and on showers until about starting time; the temperature was about 45. These were not ideal for orienteering; but the weather got better (the rain stopped) and then worse (the fog replaced it). Whereas control flags were normally visible from at least 50 meters away, participants now had to get very close to see them and when in the open strip mine area there was nothing visible to help people orient themselves. Nevertheless, despite these conditions, we had 16 teams (28 people) start on the 3-Hour and 30 teams (45 people) start on the 6-Hour; and we had three people clear the course.

Last year's 3BC seemed to be a little too difficult; so this year, Jim Wolfe deliberately tried to design an easier course; but he clearly went overboard as evidenced by Pepe clearing the course with 45 minutes to spare. He was soon followed by Gummy Bear Overlord who cleared with 40 minutes left and later Brennen Hall who cleared with 10 minutes left. Brennen's result was more like what Jim was looking for with the new design. There were quite a few comments about the picturesque quality of some of the controls and about choices made for control sites; all of them were fairly positive.

For the 3-Hour race, Ryan Knecht was the overall winner with 917 points. Ryan had put out all the controls south of Route 56; so for the competition, he was limited to the north side of Route 56. There were quite a few people who were late on the 3-Hour race; but at least no one had a negative score.

It was a surprise that none of the 3-Hour teams found any of the First-Found tags, even though a couple of them were fairly close to the start. The teams that did find a First-Found tag were rewarded with $20 as noted in the results below. This also shows which controls had Firt-Found tags.

A little analysis of control visitations will be added at Control Visitations soon. It will show things like most and least visited controls and make some general statements about where the teams decided to go.
