Raccoon Creek State Park

It was at least as warm as the day before and the saplings, ferns,
leaves, multi-flora roses, raspberry bushes, hidden branches under
foot, poison ivy and nettles were all still out there. Extra
water was put out and the participants took advantage of it. I
did hear of a couple of falls and some cramping but everyone seemed
to recover once they had a chance to sit around in the shade for
a while.
44 of the 50 controls were placed in the forest. Two were not
placed because the locations were so overgrown; four were not placed
because they were too remote for participants in such weather.
Participants were told about five of the missing controls; the
sixth was a mystery control so there was no point in telling them.
As
usual, there were ten controls worth 10 points, ten worth 20 points,
ten worth 30 points, ten worth 40 points and ten worth 50 points -
total of 1230 points possible (because of missing ones). There
was a penalty of 11 points per minute late. Again, we
expected scores to be lower than in the past because of the heat
and vegetation. In the results below, you will see several people
who were awarded bonuses. The 20 point bonuses were credit for
control 115 which was displaced from where it should have been by about
50 m (I placed that control and can't give a convincing excuse for the
misplacement; so I will use Flip Wilson's excuse "The Devil made me do
it" - most of you will probably have to look up who Flip Wilson is.)
If you couldn't find 115 and did not get credit, let me know.
The one 40 point bonus is credit for control 136 which was
apparently easily confused with a nearly identical feature nearby.
Again we had a
substantial crew helping to put on the event. Jerry Agin and
Laurie Opila dealt with check-in; Joe Logan and John Huffman managed
the parking; Jen Livingston handled finish check-off; Laurie
Opila and Jen Livingston prepared the food; Jim Wolfe handled
registration changes, downloading and producing the results;
Alexis Rzewski and Jim Wolfe put out the controls; Jen
Livingston, Alexis Rzewski, Jerry Agin, Dave Battista and Jim Wolfe did
control pickup.
