Night Orienteering
at
Keystone State Park

Night orienteering is not recommended for beginners.  Unlike most WPOC events, there will be no beginner instruction at the Night-O.  Although the course will have some easy controls, the darkness will make them much more difficult than they would be in daylight.  People who do night orienteering should already have some experience in orienteering in daylight.  For any minors who are not accompanied by a parent, a waiver form must be brought to the event; you can get the waiver form at www.wpoc.org/waivers.htm

Time Table for 12 April 2025:

7:00 pm
Registration will be open for those who haven't preregistered and signing of the waiver for those who have preregistered and are not club members.  To preregister, go to www.wpoc.org/preregistration.htm .   Preregistration is preferred so that we are sure we have enough maps.

7:51 pm (approximately):    Sunset

8:00 pm
Map distribution and briefing about the event.  At this time, we will want to make sure everyone is properly equipped for night orienteering.  The course is a score-O with 25-30 controls worth varying numbers of points.  All controls will be marked with the usual orange and white nylon bag and have a rod wrapped in reflective tape directly above or beside the bag.  There will also be a blue control box at the control for you to record the fact that you were there.

8:30 pm
Mass Start for everyone.  You will have 90 minutes  to find as many points as you can.  Lateness penalties will be rather severe.

10:00 pm
The course closes. You must return by this time to avoid being penalized.  All participants must return to the start/finish by 10:30 pm because we will begin taking down the course at that time.

Required equipment:
Compass (we will loan you one if necessary),
SI card (we will loan you one if necessary),

Whistle (we will sell you one if you don't have one),
Light (with spare batteries or a second backup light - we will NOT have spares).

It is possible that you will be walking/running along a road that carries a some night traffic.  You will also be crossing a road that definitely has night traffic. Therefore, we recommend that you wear some bright colored outer clothing.
