Western PA Orienteering Club
(WPOC)
History
WPOC
was founded in 2003 after the IUPOC
club went out of existence. It was founded by former members
of the IUPOC club and others interested in promoting the sport.
In 2008, WPOC was incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania as a
non-profit organization. Later that same year, WPOC received
its 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service.
The club bylaws are available here
Each year since 2003, WPOC has hosted a number of orienteering events
where we offer opportunities to the general public to experience and
practice orienteering. The club also has made various
presentations and taught workshops on the use of map and compass each
year. Our most significant events have been:
- Keystone Capers a National
Orienteering event which took place in June 2011 at Keystone State Park
and Deer Lakes Park
- Raccoongaine a
mini-rogaine which we have hosted annually since 2010 at Raccoon Creek
State Park
- The Babcock Bog & Boulder Challenge a
mini-rogaine which we have hosted annually since 2021 at the Babcock Division of Gallitzin State Forest
For
our events, we use a substantial collection of maps of parks and other
areas in western PA. To see the scope of our activities,
you can see the locations mapped here
