Babcock Division of Gallitzin State Forest
2nd Babcock Bog & Boulder Challenge
29 April 2023

The weather forecast for the day had been for showers in the morning, tapering to none in the afternoon.  Instead, there were no showers at all; temperature was about 50 to 55 with very light winds.  It was a good day for orienteering.  We had 40 teams, 62 participants.

Generally, everyone seemed to have a good time.  There were several reports of the difficulty of finding control #84 (it was in a difficult place) and a couple of reports about not being able to find #56 (which was not in a difficult location).   Fortunately, there were no serious injuries; a few people came back with minor problems (scratches, a possible  sprain); one person lost his compass and had to return early.  For me there was one disappointment - I had specifically placed control #76 because of the view it afforded of the wind turbines just outside Babcock; however, I don't think anyone saw them because from all reports much of the strip mine area was shrouded in fog.

The event featured First Found Bonuses - 8 controls were chosen and the first person to reach each of them was given $20.  Four of these bonuses were awarded to people in the 3-hour race; four were awarded to people in the 6-hour race.  The winners of the bonuses are noted in the "Bonus" column of the results.  Individuals were limited to one bonus award each;  I heard many stories in which a person could not pick up a bonus marker because s/he already had one.  Nevertheless, I was happy with the distribution of the bonuses; last year no one in the 3-hour race got any of them.

Miscellaneous notes:  Wildlife reports from participants:  one turkey and one coyote.  Found:  one sweat band at control #81.

Jim Wolfe designed the course and he and Ryan Knecht put out the controls.  Ryan also appears in the results; however, he was restricted to visiting only controls he did not place.  Thanks to Joe Logan and Alexis Rzewski for handling parking.  Thanks to Sherry Shank, Loretta Opila and Jim Wolfe for handling check-in.  Thanks to Loretta Opila for preparing the food and making the awards.  Thanks to Greg & Kathleen Lennon for the addition of chocolate to the available food.

A few  comments about the course based on control visits:  The most visited controls could easily be guessed - #32, #34, and #38 the ones closest to the start.  The most visited high value control was #83; it was fairly easy to reach - this was because it had to be moved after the course was designed; the original location (400 m away) was made too easy when the forestry people put in a road that went right to it.  The least visited controls were #40 and #65; that was a little disappointing because both are picturesque locations; but both are a little out of the way from the routes most people planned.  The most controls that any team reached on the 3-hour was 17; the least was 2 with an average of  9.  I was pleased that only three controls were not visited by anyone on the 3-hour, #36, #53 and #82.  The most controls that any team reached on the 6-hour was 33; the least was 3 (because of a lost compass) with an average of 19.
