Babcock
Division of Gallitzin State Forest
Babcock Bog & Boulder Challenge
30 April 2022
We rolled the dice and the weather turned out to be almost ideal
- temperatures in the upper 50's and low 60's, partly cloudy
and
little wind. Things were looking iffy earlier in the month as
more than 2/3 of the days had either rain or snow, with 8 inches of
snow 10 days before the event.
Nearly all of the comments I heard about the course were positive.
People liked the terrain and the map, as well as the
challenge
that the course presented. A couple of the 3-hour people came
back and reported not being able to find #66. However, when
the
6-hour people came in, several of them confirmed that it was in the
right place. There were a couple minor complaints about #86
(a
distinct tree in the middle of the forest) - one person said it should
have been worth more points because it was so difficult; one had a hard
time finding it because he did not look at the photo which was provided
in the notes so that people would know what to look for. It
was
not anticipated that anyone would clear the course; however, two people
nearly cleared it, visiting 37 of the 40 controls.
The event offered one incentive to the participants. Seven
controls were marked with "First Found" tags; each of these were worth
$10 to the person who reached the control first. It was
anticipated that at least some of these tags would be found by 3-hour
people; however, they were all found by 6-hour participants.
No
one found more than one. The controls which were tagged were
34,
36, 43, 54, 62, 74 and 82.
Three things were lost during the event: one SI card (later
found
- see note in the results) and two compasses (one was found
and
returned to the owner; the other was left at control #61 near where it
was found). If
you lost a compass near #61; I have it.
Jim Wolfe designed and put out the course. Thanks to Sherry
Shank
and Laurie Opila for handling check-in. Sherry also directed
parking initially. Thanks to Laurie Opila for preparing the
food
and creating the awards. Jim Wolfe handled downloading and
results. Thanks to Eric Steinbring, Lee Bash and Jim for
picking
up the controls.

Course Setter's Analysis:
One
of my goals was to make route choice not obvious. Judging by two
things, I think I succeeded. 1) Looking at the participant's routes in
RouteGadget, even the two people who came closest to clearing the
course had significantly different routes. 2) Beginning and ending
controls were very different. With only 33 teams, eight different
controls were the first ones visited. Some of these were also last
controls - these were the controls near the start/finish; some teams
got them on the way out and some on the way back; this was to be
expected. However in addition to those, there were eight other controls
that were also last controls for some teams. A few of these clearly
reflected running out of time or weak planning (for example when #86 or
#75 or #38 or #64 were last controls); but the others I think were
route choice decisions.
I also did a frequency count of control visits. Naturally, the controls
closest to the start/finish were among the most visited. However, I was
kind of amazed to see that control #64 was the most visited of all (24
teams visited it). The least visited control was not a surprise - #34
with only 2 teams visiting. I struggled with deciding where to place
that control. I probably should have used a feature about 500 m NW of
where I did put it. That would have made it more attractive to people
visiting #85 and/or #86. I didn't do that because of the large boulder
fields between those two controls; but judging by the routes people
actually used, I should have moved it. Other controls with relatively
low numbers of visits were #39, #43, #44. and #55 (each with 8 or 9
visits). I regarded controls #85 and #86 among the most difficult (the
reason for their high point values); but I was pleased to see that each
of these had 13 teams visit.
