Frick Park
Orienteering Meet
22 September 2019

It was a very hot day for late September, temperature around 85 by mid-afternoon.  Nevertheless, we had an excellent turnout with 120 people participating and 65 starts.  Everyone seemed to have a very good time; there were a lot of positive comments.  More than a few people said they liked the format of the event - in the past all orienteering events at Frick have had cross-country courses; this was the first one in a score format.  The only complaint I heard was that one of the controls was hung too low, almost on the ground.

Yaki Barak designed and set out the course.  He predicted that no one would clear it and he was right.  Even the people with the highest scores did not get to 6 or 7 controls.  No one went to all of the 60 point controls or even all of the 50 point controls.  There were a total of 30 controls, five were 10-pointers, five were 20-pointers, five were 30-pointers, five were 40-pointers, five were 50-pointers and five were 60-pointers for a  total possible of 1050 points.  The value of the controls were influenced by how easy they were to get to.  Because the course participants were to be at all skill levels, some controls were very easy, some a little harder and so on to the most difficult ones.  Because everyone had the same map, all controls were game for anyone on any skill level.  Some beginners deliberately tried and were successful in getting to one or two difficult controls; something they were justifiably proud of.

In the table below, people are listed from highest net score to lowest.  A number of people exceeded the 90-minute time limit and were penalized 11 points for each minute (or partial minute) late.  A few entries have very short times; these are not mistakes - the people only went on the course of about an hour or less.  In the column "Category" I have attempted to categorize the participants so they can compare their results against others in the same category, rather than just comparing to the person with the most points.  The categories are my guess about the skill level of the participants:  E (expert) is for people who typically do the advanced courses, I (intermediate) is for people who typically do the novice or intermediate courses, B (beginner) is for people who are doing orienteering for the first time or have only done a beginner course before and U (unknown) is for people that I couldn't make a guess about.  If your see my categorization and disagree, let me know and I will change it.

We needed extra volunteers for this event.  Thanks to Giuseppina Mecchia, Lee Bash, Barbara Johnstone, Yaki Barak, Laurie Opila, and Mark Puda for handling registration.  Thanks to Katrina Weinmann, Debbie Stiles, Lee Bash and Andy Mowrey for handling start/finish.  Thanks to Joe Logan and Naomi Jarvis for providing instruction.  And thanks to Andy Strat, John Huffman, Kevin Fisher and Lee Bash for doing control pickup.

Alexis Rzewski was only in the registration area for part of the event; however, he managed to snap a few photos; you can see them here

Our next event is on October 6 at Yellow Creek State Park;  it will feature five cross-country courses.
