Orienteering Meet

It was a pleasant sunny spring day with temperatures in the upper 60's .  We had a reasonable turnout (47 people), although there were very few on the beginner and novice courses.  There were a  total of 33 starts with several groups doing two courses.  Jim Wolfe designed five courses for the very open park and winning times were about what would be expected.  Generally, the participants had a good time; however there were two problems:   one small and one large.

The small problem was with the results.  The printouts for all but one course showed gaps in the split times.  The control punches were recognized but there was no split time.  This was not figured out until I got home and examined the control boxes.  Somehow I had forgotten to synchronize 13 of the control boxes that were in use; and as a  result, they were still on standard time.  This made it seem to the computer like people arrived at a control before they started.  Consequently, it could not determine a split time.

The large problem was something everyone should note.  One  of the controls was near an in-holding (private property totally inside the park); it was #6 on Red (Adv Long) and #5 on Brown (Adv Short).  Some participants on these courses either trespassed on the private property or came close enough to it that the property owners believed they were trespassing.  One of the cardinal rules of orienteering is NEVER TRESPASS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.  Why?  Because the owners may complain, which they did.  And because the owners may do more than complain which can lead to us being banned from using the park in the future.  I will take part of the blame because I set the control close to the property.  But I designed the course so that people who knew what they were doing (which should be the people on the advanced courses)  should have had several reasonable route choices to the control without arousing the property owners.  You should always steer well clear of anything that is olive green (private).

Thanks to Lee and Hunter Bash, Laurie Opila and Dave Battista for handling registration.  Thanks to Naomi Jarvis and Mark Puda for helping with start/finish.  Thanks to Naomi Jarvis and  Joe Logan for conducting instruction.  And thanks to Alexis Rzewski, Yaki Barak and Jerry Agin for doing control pickup.

Here is a link to the splits (although they are mostly messed up):  splits

Our next event will be at Heritage Reservation on May 5.
