Orienteering Meet
It was a cool, rainy start for the event; but not long after the first
starts the rain stopped. Of course everything was wet, but that
would have been true anyway because of the previous rains. We had
77 participants with 36 starts. We had a few people that were
trying a course that was above their skill level and a few people that
ran out of time; but all in all, things worked out well. All of
the comments I heard were positive. The only problems occurred
during control pickup and cleanup, briefly described below.
Jim Wolfe designed the courses for this our first event at Heritage
Reservation. Judging by the times and number of DNFs, the courses
went well. It was expected that the Advanced Long course would be
fast because of the low amount of climb and the fact that several of
the legs were essentially trail runs. As a consequence, there was
a lot of competition with four people within 7 minutes of the winning
time. The fastest times for each leg were distributed among 5
people; but the fastest time from the last control to the finish was
not from one of the Advanced Long course participants. It was
from the winner of the Advanced Short course which had the same last
leg.
The problems: Purell, paper towels and garbage bags were
placed at the latrines in lieu of washing hands. One
enterprising adult who brought a small child to the event thought the
garbage bags were an appropriate place to dispose of a full baby
diaper. As we always pick up our trash on leaving, I had a less
than optimal drive home because of this act. Second, the plan was
to drive around the lake and pick up some of the distant controls.
Jake (the ranger) offered to drive me because it was expected
that the road would be muddy. However, at the dam we found a
truck and a 12-inch pipe blocking the way. This forced Jake
to back up on a twisting muddy road about 500 yards and caused me to
take an hour longer than expected to do control pickup.

Our last event of the year will be held on Nov 11 at Pine Ridge Park,
in conjunction with the annual membership meeting and pot-luck
