Beaver Street-O
Orienteering Meet
6 October 2018

It was a warm, muggy day for October; there was even a brief shower during the event.  Turnout for WPOC's first Street-O event in nine years was pretty good.  We had 67 participants (many of them kids) and 22 starts.  The event started and ended at the Beaver Library which was kind enough to host all of our administrative activities.

Jen Livingston was the meet director.  She designed a 30-control score course with controls scattered through the borough of Beaver.  The course consisted of a mass start at 11 am with 60 minutes allowed for participants to gather as many points as possible.  Controls were worth 5 or 10 points; the maximum total was 225.  Participants were penalized 6 points for each minute (or partial minute) that they were late.  Everyone seemed to have a good time.  Jen even gave out a few awards for the event winners and a participant chosen at random.

Thanks to Jan and Scott Zang, Emma Livingston and Laurie Opila for handling registration.  Thanks to Boy Scout Troop 423 for helping with a variety of tasks:  set-up, clean-up, refreshments, finish and directing participants.  The Troop consisted of leaders Moses Talbot and Paul Geisler and scouts Sean Livingston, Liam Butler, Michael Fogg, Noah Johnston and Ian Livingston.  Thanks to Jan and Scott Zang, Tom Knapp and Jason and Jennifer Livingston for control pick-up.  Thanks to Jen Livingston  for conducting instruction; she also organized all of the volunteers giving Ryan an event off.

Also, special thanks to Jennifer Cribbs, Children's Librarian at the Beaver Area Memorial Library for agreeing to host the event at the library.  And thanks  to the many private homeowners, two businesses, three churches, the fire department, the Beaver History Museum, and the Borough of Beaver for allowing control flags to be placed on the properties throughout Beaver.

Results are shown below; to see  splits to here  Note that Loretta Opila and Rob Wilkison were participating non-competitively.  Both of them also forgot to clear and check their SI cards before starting.  As a consequence, their finish time was estimated; their split times interpolated;and their scores are approximate.  In Rob's case, a couple split times are missing because his SI card was full.

The next WPOC event will be on October 14 at Heritage Reservation near Farmington PA.
