Northmoreland Park
Orienteering Meet
29 April 2018

It was certainly a nasty day for the end of April, a few snowflakes in the air, temperature in the low 40's, wind 10-20 mph.  Nevertheless, we had quite a respectable turnout for the sprints (61 people and 56 starts).  Unlike some sprints in the past, many people actually went out on two courses.  And unlike any orienteering event WPOC has ever hosted, every person and every group that started on any course actually went to every control on that course and finished.  Admittedly, a few people went to the conrols out of order; but this is definitely the first time we have never had a DNF from anyone.

Jim Wolfe set four sprint courses:  two were aimed at beginners and novices
(A and B) and two were aimed at people with more experience (C and D).  A couple people did one beginner level and one advanced level sprint.  But most people stuck with their own level, doing two beginner level sprints or two advanced level sprints.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the courses and the park.  This was our first event at Northmoreland.   One or two people commented about the map scale and the need to adjust to it.  The map was at 1:7500, whereas nearly all of our maps are 1:10000.  There was an added small challenge as competitors were told about an unusual plaque in the park and were challenged to find it.  No one reported on seeing the plaque - it is easy to overlook.

Thanks to Sherry Shank, Kevin Fisher, James Fenn and Laurie Opila for handling registration.  Thanks to Alexis Rzewski and Joe Logan for running start/finish.  Thanks to Naomi Jarvis for covering registration part of the time and instruction part of the time.  And thanks to Andy Kanavas, Lee Bash, and Yaki Barak for helping with control pickup.

Our next event is the Night-O at Yellow Creek State Park on the evening of May 5.
