WPOC worked with the Laurel Highlands Council to set up five permanent orienteering courses during 2018-19. Heritage Reservation consists of three scout camps (Liberty, Freedom and Independence) and additional land around a large lake. Jim Wolfe designed one beginner-level course for each camp, one novice-level course that covers most of Liberty and Freedom and one intermediate-level course that goes completely around the lake. All courses use a cross-country approach; that is, the controls must be visited in a specified sequence. Each beginner-level course has 8 controls; the novice-level has 15 controls; and the one around the lake has 18 controls. As you visit the controls, you should write the code letter from the control stand on the control card portion of the instructions. You can determine if your code letters are correct by checking with the Laurel Highlands Council.
Heritage Reservation is owned by the Boy Scouts of America and is therefore a private area. The courses are set up for the benefit of the scouts and reservation staff who may use them at any time. All others must obtain explicit permission from the Laurel Highlands Council to go onto the reservation.
The maps and instructions for using for
each course are available in program offices at Heritage Reservation. You can also get the maps and instructions
