WPOC worked with Allegheny County Parks personnel to create two permanent orienteering score courses at Hartwood Acres in 2024. Score courses allow participants to go to the controls in any order and to stop whenever they wish. One course consisting of controls numbered 1 through 9 is designed for beginners. The other course consisting of controls labeled A through N is designed for intermediate level orienteers. Visiting the controls is on the honor system; that is, there is no verification that participants have actually visited the controls they say they have visited.
You can download or print a map of the Beginner course at Hartwood Beginner. You can download or print a map of the Intermediate course at Hartwood Intermediate. You can download or print a page of Instructions that applies to both the Beginner and Intermediate courses at Instructions. Finally, you can download or print a map showing all of the controls for both courses at All Controls. All of these images are intended to be printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper with no scaling; that is, actual size. The maps are in Landscape orientation; the instructions are in portrait orientation. You can also get these maps and instructions from Allegheny County Parks (a link will be provided here when these materials are available).
Here are some driving directions to Hartwood Acres: Directions. Once you enter Hartwood Acres, go to the large parking lot that is northwest of the mansion. The start for both the Beginner and Intermediate courses is near the northeast corner of that parking lot. Look for a post with a red and white square at the top and the word "Start" on it.
